Some in the District may be sour at having lost the Murder Capital of America crown shortly after the millennium. So which city currently has the distinction? It seems Killadelphia and Bodymore are "gunning" for the prize, and we should never count out the Big Sleazy. Homicides in DC have been steadily dropping, however. Which may have inspired the Supreme Court to intervene in the hopes of winning back the title.
Today’s 5-4 ruling struck down the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban on handguns. This will no doubt result in a higher body count here in Washington. As the LA Times reports, "The basic issue for the justices was whether the amendment protects an individual’s right to own guns no matter what, or whether that right is somehow tied to service in a state militia." Because the Framers would surely have been down with roving gangs of Glock-packing crackheads.
While it’s clear we live in "interesting times," as the ancient Chinese
curse proverb goes, it’s nice to know that some things remain consistent. Like Justice Antonin Scalia never ever making a sound or reasonable decision. Gotta love those lifetime appointments.
