Last night was historic and exciting, yet still a smidgen disappointing. Barack Obama officially became the first African-American nominee of a major political party — a truly significant event in our nation’s narrative. With an unsurmountable lead in pledged delegates and steady flow of superdels, Barry was able to once and for all declare himself the Democratic nominee, and focus on facing down John McCain. Sort of.
Hillary Clinton‘s non-concession speech was typically tone-deaf and quasi-delusional. As her supporters chanted "Denver, Denver," Clinton served up the same fuzzy math and half-baked logic she’s been trying to sell for the last few months. Rather than gracefully conceding to her opponent (who has himself been nothing short of gracious), she vainly trumpeted her own broken campaign. Hillary seems hellbent on boxing Obama in, thereby limiting his chances to vanquish the GOP machine in November.
The venue she chose for her speech was a basement auditorium with no cell access, TV monitors or any way to communicate with the outside world. So Clinton supporters were essentially isolated in their own little cocoon, unable to access information about Obama’s delegate triumph. No Kool-Aid was served.
Kinda reminds you of this clip, doesn’t it? (I held back on posting for months, because I thought it was a bridge to far, but it’s quite well done and scarily funny.)
Now she wants to be VP? I think she blew that chance back when she was praising McCain’s "experience" over that of her Democratic primary opponent. Unfortunately, Hill still has enough political weight to force Barry to at least ask her to be his running mate. And if she turns him down, his pick will be tagged as an also ran. She’s also made it impossible for him to consider Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebilius, who would offend Clinton’s female supporters because she’s a woman, but not their woman.
I don’t see how Obama can carry forth his message of change with a ethically-compromised running mate and her pet Bubba in the wings. But that’s just me.
Here are two excellent takes from this morning’s papers:
And here’s a really interesting piece in the Post about pro-Clinton blogger Michelle Marshall‘s conversion to Obama. She apparently holds a lot of water with Hillheads, but so far it looks like she’s gonna get painted as another "Judas."
Did anyone notice how Presidential Obama looked last night? And I loved Michelle’s purple dress. I think I have a crush on both of them. . .
