Wait. Did I miss something? Did I hear correctly?!? Today at at the White House, Dana Perino sunk to new levels of spinsanity. Watch it:
Reporter: . . .but Osama bin Laden is the one that — you keep talking about his lieutenants, and, yes, they are very important, but Osama bin Laden was the mastermind of 9/11. . .
Perino: No, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the mastermind of 9/11, and he’s sitting in jail right now.
OK. Let’s pause for a moment and let that sink in. The "Mouth of Bush" just casually dropped the news that Osama Bin Laden is not the droid we’re looking for. Turns out Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the guy who’s conveniently sitting in Guantanamo Bay right now, the fella who "confessed" after having been waterboarded, is now the true "evil-doer" responsible for the horrible attacks seven years ago. The mind reels.
Now, I have to admit the reporter was quick on her toes with a follow up, especially after having her mind blown along with everyone else in the room.
Reporter: Well, what, in this White House’s opinion. . . what was the role of Osama bin Laden, then, for 9/11?
Perino: Well, obviously, as the leader of al Qaeda, he is somebody that we want to bring to justice. He was the one that asked his deputies to plot and plan and carry out attacks. And that’s why we’ve been aggressively going after them, as well.
So now the line is, "Bin Laden asked his deputies to plot and carry out attacks." Wow, if the deputies are the ones to worry about, it sure is great that we’ve been so successful with capturing all those "Number Two al Qaeda Lieutenants." Unreal.
Meanwhile, John McCain says he has a "secret plan" to catch bin Laden. How about catch and release? After all, we’re talking about a little fish here, right?
