I'm still recovering from a rather potent stomach flu which has forced me to work from home (awww) and stick close to the John (not McCain). So why the hell would I tempt vomitous fate by listening to a Sarah Palin speech in Latrobe, PA? I guess I'm just a fuckin' Maverick™.
Seriously, everything that comes out of this woman's pie mooseburgerhole is a shrill, fatuous falsehood. Even if Obama really were a baby-eating terrorist born of a jackal, I'd still have to vote for him simply because Palin MUST NOT get within 4,000 miles of the White House.
Because she's dangerous. Here's an excerpt from an article at The Agonist, called "Onward Christianist Soldiers":
"[Palin] has an anointing by some self-appointed Dominionist bishops who have declared her to be The One (sorry Barack, there can only be one true “The One”). The Dominionists are a growing movement of Christianists who seek political power not to enact any political agenda, but to purify America and extend their brand of Christianity across the nation. Much more so than George W. Bush, Sarah Palin is “of the faith” and understands the code words of the Christianist movement. She understands that the Bible trumps the poor, old Constitution, lying as it is in tatters from the destruction wrought by George W. Bush.
"The Christianists will forgive her the Neiman Marcus clothes, the traveling make-up artist, the all-too-human family, and the rumors of past marital problems. Some of these trappings of wealth are simply necessary for her to appeal to the broader secular society requiring purification. The rumors and negative press stories are the works of the Devil, because the Christianists know that Satan is constantly present in our lives with temptations, falsehoods, and snares."
This cult believes the "evil" in this country can be broken into zip codes — I'm not kidding! If elected to high office, Palin's purification of the land will include the silencing (or worse) of anyone who stands in the way of her fascist theology, the goal of which is the acceleration of Armageddon. These zealots will not be happy until Jesus lands his spaceship at Meggiddo, and they'll take whatever steps necessary clear a path for His arrival.
So what, you might say – we've already had an evangelical in the Oval Office and we're all still here (for now). But Palin is far more threatening than Dubya, whose zeal is based on the fact that Baptism beat back the bottle and bolstered his political fortunes. Bush's overall psychology is infantile, and his attachment to Christianism is akin to child and security blanket. The President is clearly not a deep thinker; one imagines his faith to be equally superficial. Bush believes because it's convenient to believe. Nothing in his spiritual ideology requires reflection — to the contrary, it reinforces and stratifies his folie de grandeur. That's why it works for him. But if it stopped working, he'd kick Jesus to the curb like a Tijuana hooker on Monday morning.
Palin, on the other hand, is the genuine article. Unlike Bush, she's not a recent convert to Christianism — it's in her bloodstream. And her sole earthly goal is to spread the infection. You start with those of weak intellectual constitution, whose mental immune systems are compromised due to cognitive atrophy. In other words, "real" Americans. Due to the Rovian exploitation of the electorate, these people have been cudgeled into submission, only reacting to Pavlovian cues of intolerance, parochialism and jingoistic "patriotism."
If there's a silver lining, it's that, despite some evidence of the race tightening, Palin continues to be a drag on the Republican ticket. Some 59 percent of the voting public now believe she's unqualified for office, and the party's intellectual wing have all but abandoned her. If McCain/Palin lose, expect a serious, and perhaps permanent rift to emerge in the Grand Old Party. This could ultimately be a positive for true Conservatives, who sold their political souls in a Faustian bargain with the forces of savage evangelism.
If the coming Neo-Neo-Conseratives stick to the core concepts of limited, responsible government, individual liberty, cogent national security and drop the bullshit culture wars, I could even see myself voting for one of their candidates. But that that day is a long way off.
Please, do everything in your power to ensure an Obama/Biden victory on November 4. We must wrest this country from the grasp of anti-intellectualism and bigotry, for our own sake, and the sake of those generations to come.
Today is Halloween. If this post didn't scare you, I don't know what will.
