Thought I'd mention some recent posts at two of my favorite blogs, Sentient Developments and Blog-Sothoth.
SD is published by George Dvorsky — a rather brilliant Canadian who writes about science, human improvement, ethics and Buddhism (he also enjoys quality metal/progressive and Sci-Fi). This entry, however, is about the election of Barack Obama to the American Presidency. Dvorsky thoughtfully lays out some of the many challenges Obama will face in governance, predicting his reign will be similar to that of Dem-Moderate Bill Clinton rather than a progressive love-in. Check it out here.
I agree that Obama is no cookie-cutter liberal. Yet the comparison with Clinton is not exact. Obama won by a wider margin than his Dem predecessor, so he'll wield greater influence over Congress. This should help him reign in any bloodlust on the Hill that could result in the kind of mid-term blowback that thwarted the Dems in '94. Also, the appointment of Rahm Emanuel to Chief of Staff indicates that he's striving to get his appointments right from the outset, thereby avoiding the confusion that marred Clinton's first year-and-a-half in office.
Blog-Sothoth is operated by our web-buddy Geoff — a Baltimore educator and prodigious reader/appreciator of film. He teaches in the utterly broken B-More school system, and the near-daily chronicles of his experiences are a must-read for anyone who wants a glimpse of just how bad things are in our inner-city learning institutions. Geoff was recently transferred to a school that's even worse than the pit he was in before, yet his indefatigable commitment to improving his students' lot and an ace sense of humor save his posts from being completely depressing. Here are two recent entries.
We've got some new semi-regular contributors here at The Contrarian; I'll be introducing them to you soon.
