In light of one of my New Year’s Resolutions (not to talk shit about anyone who isn’t able to defend themselves), I wanted to respond to a non-controversy. In today’s Contrarian poll, there’s a “humorous” reference to Trig Palin — a small child afflicted with Down Syndrome.
I love and admire persons with Down Syndrome. In fact, I’ve had several jobs providing care for mentally challenged people, and found many of them to be more worthy of respect than most folks you encounter in everyday life. It warms my heart to read about the medical/societal advances that allow individuals with this impairment to lead robust, fulfilling lives. I’ve bookmarked the personal web pages of Down Syndrome couples who are making their way through the world.
I still think the Trig quip is pretty funny, but it verges on inappropriate, due to the fact that this kid had no choice about his birth conditions, and isn’t in any position to defend himself. But his mother is clearly a fair target.
Did I violate one of my personal principles? What do you think?
