What the Hell Is a “Wintry Mix,” Anyway?

Where did this phrase come from? The Washington Post Metro section looks lightheartedly at the etymology of an vague and annoying meteorological description.

In other weather-related news, it’s as cold as a witch’s what-have-you here in the Mid-Atlantic. As a former Northern boy, I rarely admit to this kind of thing. On the other hand, at least we have positive degrees — more than some regions can say.
