We know how you feel, Senator.
Good old Senator Patrick Leahy. He might be a stinkin’ Deadhead (and Batman fan!) but at least he knows right from wrong. Leahy recently spoke at Georgetown University about the necessity of not letting the Dubya crew off the hook for their sundry Constitutional misdeeds. HuffPo:
“Many Americans feel we need to get to the bottom of what went
wrong,” said Leahy. “I agree. We need to be able to read the page
before we turn the page.”
The Senator also stated that Attorney General Eric Holder never gave
assurances to Republican Senators that he would not prosecute Bush
administration officials who may have been involved in illegalities
such as authorizing torture or warrantless wiretapping.
“There are some who resist any effort to investigate the misdeeds of
the recent past,” he said. “Indeed, during the nomination hearing of
Eric Holder, some of my fellow Senators on the other side of the aisle
tried to extract a devil’s bargain from him in exchange for the votes
– a commitment that he would not make… That is a pledge no
prosecutor should give and Eric Holder did not give it. But because he
did not it accounts for some of the votes against him.”
I’ve been studying behind-the-scenes accounts of how the Bush Administration conducted business, and I’ve come to the unsurprising conclusion that Vice President Cheney deserves the majority of the blame. Believe it or not, Bush actually had the inclination to govern “compassionately,” but lacked the courage of his convictions. Dubya had doubts about the tax breaks for the wealthy (proposed by Cheney), calculated environmental negligence (Cheney again), NSA domestic intercepts (total Cheney) and torture (you better believe it’s Cheney).
Georgie may have been the “decider,” but he typically only chose from options carefully selected for him by the Vice. Bush must ultimately be judged as an intellectually lazy President who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) stand up for his principles. I’d call it sad, but it pales in comparison to the shit that went down at GitMo, including genital mutilation with scalpels.
There’s a karmic shitstorm coming, if it’s not here already.
