Forgive me for not being on top of the news that Ed McMahon died — the tragic Metro train crash (my line; my stop; fairly freaky) was competing for my attention.
I grew up with Johnny Carson‘s “Tonight Show,” where McMahon was practically the Moses of sidekicks. I also spent plenty of family pizza nights watching “Star Search.” In other words, me and Big Ed go back a ways.
I don’t have much to offer in tribute besides the tune “Johnny Carson,” by the Beach Boys. This twisted little ditty is from the so-awful-it’s-awesome 1977 album The Beach Boys Love You. It’s basically a drug-induced love song to Carson from damaged bandleader Brian Wilson, but it at least references McMahon’s signature line (which was also famously co-opted by Jack Nicholson in The Shining).
