I am dubious that world powers will put significant pressure on the Saudi government any time soon (please note: women in Afghanistan suffered horribly for many years under the Taliban). I am also dubious that the methods employed by major world powers in such situations are the most direct and effective ways to achieve significant social change (please note: the tiring, demoralizing war in Afghanistan). I applaud Ms. al-Huwaider’s methods of civil disobedience. It is important that we are inspired by her courage and appreciative of our own freedoms, and that we continue to encourage her work. Non-violent movements have a precedented success rate in the modern world, but it takes diligence and compassion to convince others to change. I hope that this woman's incredible energy can stay the course to peaceful and effective ends, and I stand behind her. I think that the edits were true to my intents. It's important to continue to call attention to the abhorrent state of affairs in Saudi Arabia. I hope you are right when you say that "eventually, that desire will be impossible to contain." I am cynical. This has been an issue for so long. I don't see any signs it will be changing soon. Where is the unified pressure from major world powers to change their social structure? Great post.
