The kinds of energies that the LHC is designed to get up to is not unknown in the universe. If Higgs Bosons occur during these superfast proton crashes, they should be occurring out in space—even in our atmosphere due to gamma-ray bombardment. Personally, I think these physicists are having fun with the public and killing time while the LHC comes online after it's last little accident. Still, yet another accident after this is going to start to look strange.
