I got in a friendly argument this morning with an associate about the musical validity of a capella. (He performed in a high school singing group with one of those terrible punny names.) Now, I truly respect vocal harmony, and employ it regularly in my own compositions. I’ve spent years absorbing the genius of Brian Wilson and have even studied his heroes, The Four Freshmen. So don’t tell me about the power of a killer vocal stack. I’m quite familiar.
Instead of itemizing every single reason why I cannot stand “Glee” or “American Idol” or any other mass-culture product that further strips art from music, I’ll let this clip from Step Brothers speak for me:
