The Contrarian examines below-the-radar issues in media, metaphysics, technology, policy and the creative sector. Our mission: to advance critical writing outside of the constraints of academic convention.
Launched in 2006, The Contrarian initially covered music culture, but soon branched out to include commentary on a range of issues. The site was founded by Washington, DC-based musician, educator and policy wonk Casey Rae, who has contributed music journalism to such publications as Dusted Magazine, Signal to Noise, Washington City Paper and Pitchfork, and who regularly speaks on issues at the intersection of music, technology, policy and law as Executive Director of the Future of Music Coalition — a national nonprofit education, research and advocacy organization for musicians.
The Contrarian Media is the parent company of art-rock/experimental music label LUX ETERNA RECORDS.
